Find Free Money

"Found money is no fairytale."
"Found money is no fairytale."

There is no such thing as a free lunch, but I have proof that found money is no fairytale. The golden, egg laying, goose in my case was the state of Florida. The unanticipated promise of cash in my pocket came in a letter signed by the Chief Financial Officer of the Sunshine state. We received two letters written on state letterhead stationary. One was addressed to my husband, and the second to me. Each letter contained the same information. "This letter is to inform you that you have unclaimed property in the amount of..." This was not a scam, the letters had former addresses and indicated the last four digits of our social security numbers. We accessed the same information through Florida's informational website to assure the letter's authenticity. The total amount outlined in the correspondence came to a little more than $1300.00. Wow ! We would leave a pile of money in a bank account and forget about it? No way! But that is exactly what happened. The specified account is from very early in our marriage. Perhaps we were blinded by young love.

Still in love but no longer blinded, we quickly began the process of redeeming the unclaimed. It is not difficult. We followed the instructions detailed in the letter which included providing proof of identification. The favored proof were copies of our driver's license, and social security cards.

It is possible there's a heap of ready money somewhere with your name on it. Find out by visiting the website of the state in which you live. Google your state's name, or the phrase 'unclaimed property' to discover the correct web address. You may receive a letter in the mail as we did. Make sure to authenticate the letter. This can be done by calling the office of the Chief Financial Officer of your state. Look the number up yourself. Do not rely on the number in the letter. Every state has a website. Investigate the possibility of a claim, by entering the required information. You may be able to print a claim form right from the site.

One more thing. The day after receiving the letter from the State of Florida, we received a letter from an Asset Recovery agency. This agency offered to act as Claimant Representative, for a recovery fee of $28.00. It is completely unnecessary to hire an agency to collect your funds. In addition to being unnecessary, it increases the opportunity of being taken by a scam. All that is required to make a claim is effort on your part. Investigating a claim is totally free. Happy hunting!

This is good news. I often get these emails. I think most of them are scams, but in your case that wasn't so.

Sandyspider, thanks for reading. Listen, just so you are not confused. The letter came in the mail, not via e-mail. I wouldn't want you to be scammed. I don't trust the e-mails either, and would not have trusted the letter if I had not looked into it.
